February 2016-Chris Maker: People, Place and State 2005-2015

Shade Projects is proud to present the solo exhibition of Chris Maker: People, Place and State 2005-2015, in Shade Gallery at the monOrchid. This exhibition will showcase ten years of work and artistic development in Maker’s career bringing together his unique perspective and extensive background in city planning and architecture. When asked about his work Maker says, “My work is an exploration of people, the environment and the political state, with an interest of literal and figurative signs in cultural phenomenon, architecture and city planning.“ The artist is concerned with the ways these forces shape perceptions, social interactions and daily activities “in addition to working with allegory, philosophical narratives, personal anecdotes, and overarching themes such as man versus the environment to express these relationships,” states Maker. “Maker’s work presents an inimitable grasp of design, medium and subject while bringing together and exploring interesting ideas and concepts, says Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse.

Chris Maker was traditionally trained receiving his Bachelors of Fine Arts from University of Minnesota going on to receive a Master’s Degree in City Planning from the University of Cincinnati and receiving his Masters of Architecture from The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. Maker is a former member of the artist collective Eye Lounge and he has extensively exhibited his artwork across the nation most recently exhibiting with ASU Gammage Auditorium, Eye Lounge, Frontal Lobe Gallery and Mesa Contemporary Art Museum. His work has been features in publications both online and in print including Arizona Republic, Downtown Devil and Phoenix New Times.

January 2016-Surfaces

Shade Projects is proud to present Surfaces, the solo photography exhibition of Joseph Podlesnik in Bokeh Gallery.  Surfaces features a small selection of color photographs from his recently published book, capturing a variety of intriguing surfaces through a refreshing and unique perspective. Podlesnik recently self-published a photobook titled “Surfaces: Photographs by Joseph Podlesnik”. Podlesnik's photography focuses on the process and his environment utilizing his camera and techniques to “frame scenarios/ compositions, to communicate ideas more formally through design." Letting go of control during picture-taking is also part of his approach.

“Through his lens Podlesnik brilliantly captures unusual imagery, highlighting vivid colors, stunning patterns and bold lines enticing the viewer to look closer at the surface,” says Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse. This exhibition showcases a small selection of photographs from this book and recently shot work that features imagery that is pure, unusual, complicated and at times perplexing to the eye. January 2016- Beyond Place, the Solo Exhibition of Onna Jeanna Voellmer

Shade Projects is proud to present Beyond Place, the solo exhibition of Onna Jeanna Voellmer in Shade Gallery. Beyond Place showcases a selection of Voellmer’s mixed media paintings inspired by her time in nature and her extensive travels around the world. The idea of place is very important to the artist who sees it as both a literal location, as well as the human side of being about the culture and stories it contains. When asked about Beyond Place Voellmer, stated, “Place is something that gets deeply embedded in our consciousness, more like a dream that strings our memories together.“

“Utilizing acrylic paint, graphite, colored pencils, India ink and more, Voellmer creates mesmerizing paintings through a very organic and natural process that truly capture the simple and unique beauty of nature” states, Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse. December 2015- Discovering Arizona

Shade Projects is proud to present Discovering Arizona, the solo exhibition of Jim Bochenek in his debut exhibition at Bokeh Gallery in the monOrchid. “Discovering Arizona is a beautiful exhibition that explores the diverse landscape of Arizona examining nature and more through Bochenek’s enchanting lens. The artist began his career with a Pentax camera and Kodak film and over time prefers to use a Nikon Digital Camera. Inspired by Arizona and his passion for traveling, hiking and exploring our environment with the ultimate goal of “with a broad range of interests “chasing the perfect shot, with the hope to capture the ephemeral impact of each scene I encounter”, says Bochenek.

Bochenek work centers on “combining composition and symmetry with subtle yet sophisticated enhancement in a wide variety of genres and subject matter”, states Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse. Bochenek received his degree from Arizona State University and a proclaimed self-taught artist he has been pursuing his with a love of photography from a young age. He has exhibited his work at a few venues throughout the valley, most recently at Capture12 Gallery, the Inaugural ArtWalk in Douglas Arizona, an most recently at Arizona State Gammage Auditorium this past October. Bochenek’s photography has also been featured in local publications including Phoenix New Times and YabYum Music & Arts.

December 2015- CELEBRITY

Shade Projects is proud to present Celebrity, a group exhibition exploring how celebrities and how they are perceived in society. Artists explore how we associate celebrity with glitz, glamour and the diverse creative worlds of television, film, fashion, and art. This exhibition will showcase a vibrant selection of drawings, paintings and mixed-media works that depict various celebrities and personalities of both past and present while examining what celebrity is to each artist.

We will be showcasing a dynamic group of six local artists including Babe&Butter, DadSocks, Jeanna Delfin, Jesse Perry, Jon Wassom and Larry Willis. Each artist possesses a very distinct style, unique voice and great skill that perfectly lends itself to bringing this fascinating theme to life in Shade Gallery, states Curator, Nicole Royse.

November 2015- Architectural Explorations

Shade Projects is proud to present Architectural Explorations, the solo exhibition of Brian Klein in his first in Bokeh Gallery at the monOrchid. “Abstractions In Design's is the artists newest series of work, capturing architectural gems from around the country, utilizing the latest digital imaging technology printing this series directly to aluminum and copper. Klein is definitely pushing the boundaries of traditional printmaking and these metals lend themselves perfectly to the organic elements used in the structures themselves. Presenting a brilliant collection of black and white photography with such beauty, mystery and an obvious love of architecture that Klein says is “A source of inspiration representing what can be achieved through design and the creative use of raw materials”.

“Architectural Explorations is an intriguing exhibition, offering the viewer a unique perspective on various architectural masterpieces highlighting the pure beauty of their design”, says Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse. Klein’s keen eye for detail is impeccable, capturing stunning locations, bold lines, and excellent lighting within each of his photographs that are sure to captivate his viewer’s. “I've always been inspired by architecture, I do love to find and photograph the aesthetic beauty in architectural design, especially abstract forms”, states Klein.  When asked why black and white photography Klein says, “it is versatile with a timeless look, the fact that reality can be presented this way, something different, dramatic and nostalgic.”

Klein studied photography in college and has now had a successful career as a photographer for over 26 years utilizing silver halide and digital processes to create his signature monochromatic imagery. He has exhibited his work at several galleries throughout the valley most recently at ASU Vault Gallery, Artlink’s Annual Juried Exhibition at Ice House, and Drive-Thru Gallery. Klein’s photography has also been featured in local publications including AZ Foothills Magazine and Phoenix New Times.

November 2015- TEN: Modern Abstract

Shade Projects is proud to present Ten: Modern Abstract, a juried group exhibition, centering on the board theme of Abstraction, breaking away from traditional representation and norms. Abstraction is typically defined as “art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.” Showcasing a dynamic selection of local artists that work in a variety of mediums showcasing painting, sculpture, mixed media collage, prints and wood. The featured ten artists include Holly Anderson, Lora Barnhiser, Kevin Caron, Jeff Davis, Denise Fleisch, Thuong Nguyen, Daniel Shepherd, Sam Johnson, Dan Pederson, and Irma Sanchez.

A departure from the realistic the artists focus on shape, form, color and line creating compositions independent for traditional visual references. The exhibition features artists at every phase in their careers that have created beautiful, expressive and diverse work for this exhibition. Mesmerizing colors, textures, and patterns will fill the gallery space creating a truly sensory experience for the viewer”, says Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse.

October 2015: Abstractions

Shade Projects is proud to present Abstractions, the solo exhibition of Johnny Kerr in Bokeh Gallery, which marks his debut at the monOrchid. Abstractions features a beautiful selection of Kerr’s black and white abstract architecture series that showcase the simplicity and elegance of great design.

Capturing his surroundings with a refreshing new perspective while creating photographs that emphasize his love of Graphic design, Says Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse. He is a self-taught photographer who began pursuing photography in 2011. This series of work is also featured in Kerr’s self-published book Abstractions released in early 2015.

Shade Projects is proud to present Paradigm Shift, the solo exhibition of Robert Gentile in Shade Gallery, marking his much anticipated return to the monOrchid after winning the Thermal Phx art competition last summer. A skilled artist who has over the last five years rediscovered his passion for art after taking a long hiatus creating riveting works in a variety of mediums including spray paint, acrylic, markers, and pastels. Paradigm Shift explores his continued growth as an artist and his love of graffiti culture, showcasing a diverse and stunning body of mixed media work that the artist has created exclusively for his solo exhibition, says Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse. His work is a hybrid of classical and urban, with early roots in graffiti he has explored and adapted finding his voice through the years resulting in what he calls “visually stimulating, high contrast imagery that the audience can connect with emotionally on some level.”

SEPTEMBER 2015- Early Works: 1994-1999

Shade Projects is proud to present the Early Work: 1994-1999 from Noé Badillo in Bokeh Gallery, marking his return to the monOrchid and his first solo exhibition of his photography with us. Early Work: 1994-1999 gives us an intimate look at Badillo’s subjects, “gaining a sense of stillness, and an understanding that the world looked unique through my lens from my own vantage point, in a way that was separate from the rest of the world”, says the artist.

Approaching his work from this exciting perspective allowed the artist to experience nature as an abstraction, by eliminating unnecessary elements through the use of formal composition. “This series of photographs represents the formative period of his work as an artist, photography allowed the artist to spend extended amounts of time exploring the external world through his viewfinder resulting in breathtaking imagery which echo a feeling of mystery and isolation ”, says Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse.

September 2015- Art In Motion

Shade Projects is proud to present Art In Motion from Gennaro Garcia in Shade Gallery, marking his debut at the monOrchid. Garcia is a talented seasoned artist, advocate, and chef who has brought together all of his passions in this incredible multi-media exhibition.  Art In Motion showcases a diverse body of work that explores various mediums including painting, woodwork, prints, ceramics, and wearables! His artwork is stunning with familiar subjects and imagery that Garcia says, "Are greatly influenced by his catholic upbringing along with being inspired by both Mexican and American identities".

His process is something that one just doesn’t see done today “utilizing a combination of Italian techniques from working with oils, acrylics, wood, plaster blended with a vibrant color palette from his childhood growing up in Mexico” says Garcia. “Garcia has created vibrant paintings and sculptures that are peppered with religious references and his heritage that are showcase the artists distinctive style and love of his countries”, says Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse.

AUGUST 2015: A Phoenix Odyssey

Shade Projects is happy to continue its Emerging Artist Summer Series with John Carbis presenting 2015: A Phoenix Odyssey in Bokeh Gallery. Marking his debut at the monoOrchid and his first solo exhibition of his photography, which draws comparisons through his journey through the streets of Phoenix with his interest in Science and the exploration of the universe, as well as creating a dialogue about the connections between science and art. JULY 2015- The UnSeen

Shade Projects is happy to present The UnSeen, the solo exhibition of young emerging artist Tiera Allen in Bokeh Gallery. Showcasing her love of the natural world which she captures through her lens and draws out through the processing of the photography. Allen is inspired by experimental and alternative processes and aims to explore the intrinsic magic of photography and push the boundaries of the medium. Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse says, “Allen creates stunning photography and pushes boundaries with her unique process resulting in luminous images.”Allen says, "By removing the heaviest part of the photograph (the subject), the viewer experiences the beauty and delicate process of making an image and through this act, the unseen arrives.”

Shade Projects proudly presents Order, Chaos and Everything in Between, the solo exhibition of emerging young artist Ryan J. Carey in Shade Gallery at the monOrchid. This exhibition showcases the artist’s latest series of breathtaking oil paintings which he says are “a return to the human element in art, utilizing only his breath and thinned oil paint to compose the  work”. Shade Projects Curator, Nicole Royse says this talented young artist skillfully handles oil paint, presents a complex color palette while creating an engaging composition with engrossing texture.

JUNE 2015 - LAYERS

LAYERS invades Shade Gallery this June at the Monorchid showcasing two local and talented stencil artists: DadSocks and Scott Wolf.

Connected through their love for art and the process of creating, DadSocks and Scott Wolf are both producing colorful, graphic, and bold works centered around the stencil. Stencil art involves a fascinating method of layering different shades of spray paint and acrylic with hand-cut or laser-cut stencils. Each of the artists expresses a unique voice by this method.

Shade Projects is proud to present Stories of Their Sacrifices: PTSD, the photography of Christopher OShana and Scott Johnson in Bokeh Gallery at the Monorchid during PTSD Awareness month.

This exhibition showcases two brilliant series of photography bringing light to the important topic of PTSD, the men and women it affects as well as the animals which help to heal.

Bokeh Gallery will showcase raw and emotional imagery captured by these two talented Veterans who photograph other Veterans diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder before, during, and after treatment.

MAY 2015 - Wilderness: Scenes from the Passenger Screen

Shade Projects is proud to present Wilderness: Scenes from the Passenger Screen, the solo exhibition of Nic Wiesinger in Bokeh Gallery at the Monorchid. This exhibition showcases the artist’s latest series of photography examining ideas about the Wilderness, while utilizing current technology to obtain imagery of these designated wilderness areas. Wiesinger poses important questions through his artwork such as “How do we define Wilderness, and what is truly wild in this country of Wifi and Google?”  Wiesinger presents photography taken of maps showing areas with wilderness designations paired with pictures of those same areas seen from Google Maps Street Views.

Shade Projects is excited to present From the Outside Looking In, featuring the solo exhibition of local artist, Joshua Louchheim, on display in Shade Gallery at the Monorchid. From the Outside Looking In showcases Louchheim's latest work, featuring 20 oil paintings highlighting the artist's love of the landscape that will truly engage the senses and transport the viewer to another place and time.

The Opening Reception for From the Outside Looking In will be held on First Friday, May 1st from 6pm until 10pm with the artist in attendance. The evening will also include music from the 76th Street Band who will perform 7-9pm.

The Closing Artist Reception will be held Third Friday, May 15th from 7-10pm. From the Outside Looking In will be on display in Shade Gallery at the Monorchid from May 1st until May 31, 2015.
